Long-Range Intracortical Excitation Shapes Olfactory Processing
نویسنده
چکیده
Recurrent intracortical connections are believed to be especially dense in the piriform cortex. Two studies in this issue of Neuron report several interesting features of the long-range intracortical connections and reveal their physiological roles in shaping olfactory processing.

Hierarchical organization of long-range circuits in the olfactory cortices
How sensory information is processed within olfactory cortices is unclear. Here, we examined long-range circuit wiring between different olfactory cortical regions of acute mouse brain slices using a channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2)-based neuronal targeting approach. Our results provide detailed information regarding the synaptic properties of the reciprocal long-range monosynaptic glutamatergic proje...
متن کاملA Major Role for Intracortical Circuits in the Strength and Tuning of Odor-Evoked Excitation in Olfactory Cortex
In primary sensory cortices, there are two main sources of excitation: afferent sensory input relayed from the periphery and recurrent intracortical input. Untangling the functional roles of these two excitatory pathways is fundamental for understanding how cortical neurons process sensory stimuli. Odor representations in the primary olfactory (piriform) cortex depend on excitatory sensory affe...
متن کاملComplementary sensory and associative microcircuitry in primary olfactory cortex.
The three-layered primary olfactory (piriform) cortex is the largest component of the olfactory cortex. Sensory and intracortical inputs converge on principal cells in the anterior piriform cortex (aPC). We characterize organization principles of the sensory and intracortical microcircuitry of layer II and III principal cells in acute slices of rat aPC using laser-scanning photostimulation and ...
متن کاملGABA shapes selectivity for the rate and direction of frequency-modulated sweeps in the auditory cortex.
In the pallid bat auditory cortex and inferior colliculus (IC), the majority of neurons tuned in the echolocation range is selective for the direction and rate of frequency-modulated (FM) sweeps used in echolocation. Such selectivity is shaped mainly by spectrotemporal asymmetries in sideband inhibition. An early-arriving, low-frequency inhibition (LFI) shapes direction selectivity. A delayed, ...
متن کاملRole of intraglomerular circuits in shaping temporally structured responses to naturalistic inhalation-driven sensory input to the olfactory bulb.
Olfaction in mammals is a dynamic process driven by the inhalation of air through the nasal cavity. Inhalation determines the temporal structure of sensory neuron responses and shapes the neural dynamics underlying central olfactory processing. Inhalation-linked bursts of activity among olfactory bulb (OB) output neurons [mitral/tufted cells (MCs)] are temporally transformed relative to those o...
